Mast Unstepping Day

|

Not much to say. Mast unstepping. Another season over.

Last Sail of the Season

|

September 17: 6.3 Nautical Miles

Nice September sail! Up toward Cousin's, then out and around Basket Island. Wind was flukey and gusty, but a nice sail. Saw Glissando.

Rainy August

August 15 5.0 Nautical Miles

Well, it has rained for... I think 12 days straight.... Finally we've had a couple of nice days. Heather and I managed to get out for a short sail this afternoon. We got to the boat at about 1630 and had left the mooring by 1645. There wasn't much wind in the anchorage, but it looked nice outside, so we hoisted the main and motored out to find the wind. Just outside the anchorage it was blowing about 8 or 10 knots, so we killed the engine and unfurled the jib. Nice!

Gavin's First Sail

August 31: 12.1 Nautical Miles

Well, Gavin is 10 days old, so we should take him sailing, right? We headed down to the boat around noon, and got "launch service" from Heather's parents with their large RIB. We hoisted the main and headed up toward Portland. Winds were moderate and we had a nice sail. Gavin was a little fussy at first, but settled down after getting fed.

We tacked around Clapboard and sailed up toward Little Chebeague. Then we gybed around and started heading back the way we had come, but subsequently changed our minds and headed back to the mooring past the north end of Clapboard. Nice day!

Heather's Log

July 25: 14.4 Nautical Miles

Heather writes: Light winds outside. Blowing SE 10-15 knts on the inside. Beat out of mooring field and made for passage between Chebeague and Little John. Sailed halfway up Broad Sound before turning aournd. Saw lightning over Cliff Island—ground strike—decided to start engine as we were making only 2kts and wanted to avoid storm. Wind picked up again as we were close hauled at 6.5 kts w/ rail in the water through Chebeage passage. Cut between Sturdivant and Sturdivant ledge on return to anchorage.

Friends in Town

July 19: 11 Nautical Miles

Sunny. light winds, 5-10 SW

Heather and I had our friends Cam and Mark out for a sail. Winds very light when we arrived at the boat. Motored out and found light wind. Nice sail up toward Portland, then tacked up toward the Hussey. Reached off around Cow Island, then back toward Portland Again. Tacked, then fell of for long, light run back to mooring. P/U under sail. Pennants fouled.

Light Summer Breezes

July 17

Warm—80s. Some cumulous clouds, but not thunder. Wind SE @ 5-10 knots.

Heather and I ahd a nice light air sail. NE past Clapboard. Couple of tacks up toward Chandler's Cove. Reached past Clapboard and Cow Island Ledge. Hit 6.1 knots over ground. Reached/ran back toward Falmouth Townl Landing till speed over ground dropped to 1.5 knots. Motored back to mooring.

Guys' Night Out—Snow Island July 7-8

| |

During the first week of July, Heather and I had some friends visiting from Atlanta.Jay is a sailor, and I thought it might be nice to get him out for an overnight. Plus, that would allow Heather and Tanya and the kids to spend some quality time together without us guys in the way. So we decided to take a Monday-Tuesday cruise to one of my favorite locations—Snow Island. It didn't take much twisting of Tim Lackey's arm to get him to agree that an overnight might be enjoyable, so he agreed to join us for the trip.

Summer Steam

June 26: 19.0 Nautical Miles

Heather and I headed down to the boat to beat the intense heat and humidity. Not much better on the water, but a little relief. Weather was the ubiquitous "Hazy, hot, and humid" with a light sea breeze. Had a nice light air sail on a beam reach toward Chebeague at 2.5-5.5 knots. Variable, with some nice gusts to get the boat moving. Sailed up between Chebeague and Littel John, then hardened up out Broad Sound. 4 or 5 light air tacks up the sound past Stockman Island. Tacked off to head toward Hope Island. Wind light and shifty, but eventually got past Sand Island. Wind increased between Chebeague and Hope Island. 6.0-6.5 knot beat up to Chandler's. Nice sail through Chandler's all on one tack. Reached across toward Cow Island ledge. Passed inside, then reached off around Clapboard. Wind lightened up. Motored the last 1/2 mile so we wouldn't be late to our "Birth Class" at the hospital!

Basin Cruise with Glissando

|

June 20-21: 41.2 Nautical Miles

Heather, Bailey and I got to the boat around 0930. Tim and Heidi were not far behind, and we had a quick skippers meeting, then headed out. Generally light. Sailed toward Chandler's, but then had to motor. Nice motor sail past Sand Island into Broad Sound. Motored to Little Mark, where wind shifted to sea breeze. Unfurled jib and motor sailed for about 20 minutes as the wind built, then killed engine. Nice close-beam reach to entrance of the New Meadows River, at 4.0-5.0 knots. Seas probably 4 or 5 feet, but very long and gentle. Long downwind leg up river. Strayed over "Sister's Ground" for excitement! Wind continued to lighten, and eventually had to motor the last mile or so. Anchored in Basin near Glissando in 12 at low.
