A Short Trip Into Fog
June 21 | Distance Travelled: 4.4 nm
We arrived at PYC at about 1230; Gavin and I headed out to the boat while Heather waited ashore for our friend Felicity to arrive. Gavin and I got the boat ready to go, removing the sailcover, stowing gear, and tying the dinghy off to one of the mooring pennants. Shortly, Heather and Felicity arrived via launch and we quickly got under way.
There was a fog bank hanging outside but it had been there all day so I didn't think it would be an issue. We sailed off the mooring in a nice 10 or so knots of wind. We took a couple of tacks toward Clapboard, then set a course towards Portland.
Hard on the wind, I noted that the leeward lower shroud seemed extremely loose, so I turned the helm over to Heather and went forward to take up some of the slack. Looking about I noted that the fog seemed to be rolling in, despite the fact that it had sat outside all morning.
Within only two or three minutes the visibility had closed down to half a mile or so, and we tacked and ran back toward Falmouth. After picking the mooring out of the fog, I rolled the jib and we sailed down and picked it up under sail.
Our sail lasted only about 35 minutes, but despite the fog we decided to spend some time relaxing aboard, until we were driven ashore by some ominous rumbles of thunder and a sudden darkening of the sky. We quickly packed up and headed in on the launch.
