Distance Travelled: 19.9 nm | Harmon Harbor to The Basin

cruise photoBlusetery NW in the morning. Both coastal marine and SW coast (land) forecast were calling for 5-10 knots but as usual, the wind was gusting to 20+. Pulled anchor at 1030. Headed out of the harbor and hoisted the main. Gusty, strong NW winds 5-25. Tucked single reef. Ran down along Southport under main alone 3.0-5.5. Slowly started rounding up as I worked my way down the shoreline. Soon unfurled the jib for a broad reach, then beam. Winds continued puffy. 4.5-6.5 knots. At Jackknife Ledge, hardened up for route to Cape Small. Basically hard on the wind, though angle would change as it puffed up. Near cape Small it was gusting all of 25-30 and I screamed through between Small point and Fullers Rock at 6.5 knots with the rail deeply buried and the main luffing! YIKES! Wind was coming straight down the New Meadows River so contined on a long tack across the mouth toward East Brown Cow. Tacked and started up the river toward Small Point Harbor. Winds were beginning to decrease. Near harbor, I tacked and winds continued to lighten. Soon making 2.5 knots, mostly back down river on current! Fired engine at 1340 and powered up the river in the light remains of the NW. ¶ Arrived in the Basin to find some 20 boats already there! Motored around till I found a spot not farm from my usual place, but closer in ot the shore. Anchored set at 1515. The afternoon was hot as the wind was completely still in the Basin. Put up awning and spent afternoon and evening culling and cropping photos from the cruise. Totally still overnight.
