Distance Travelled: 14.7 nm | Northeast Harbor, Mount Desert Island to Buckle Harbor, Swans Island
After four days in Northeast we were very ready to be heading on. Plus we wanted to start heading back toward Bucks Harbor, since Heather and
Gavin needed to return there around the 8th or 9th to drive home if I was to be home according to my schedule.
From the log: Motored out then raised main. Nice downwind sail through the Western Way. (Gavin: "Sail all down the west side?") Reached across to Bass Harbor Bar. Once acros the wind seemed to come forward till we were close hauled. Course was about 20 degrees too low, but we decided to sail all the way anyhow. ¶ Wind was light at 5-10 knots. Sailed in toward Pacentia Island, then tacked back across Blue Hill Bay. Wind stayed light. Making about 4.0 knots. Tacked again and thought we could probably lay our course, which we did. H took over at helm. Wind continued to lighten, but we did manage to sail the whole way. At Buckle we rounded up and dropped main. Anchored in about 7 feet at low. ¶ Rowed around some, went ashore so Gav could play on the beach. H rigged an awning. Walked through the woods; strange sculptures and markers and a ramshackle old shed„straight out of the Blair Witch Project. Kinda creepy but very cool. ¶ Nice evening stayed on deck till late viewing stars.
Harbor Notes: Buckle is nice. Reasonable protection. Room for a goodly number of boats„there were about 10 boats when we were there and nobody was particularly close. Nice views with MDI in the distance. Buckle Island has a few small but nice beaches and lots of cool trails through the woods.
