Distance Travelled: 4.6 nm | Northeast Harbor, Mount Desert Island to Northeast Harbor, Mount Desert Island

cruise photo It seems that a Penobscot Bay cruise isn't complete without some minor emergency: snagging a pot in Jericho Bay on a 25+ knot day in 2002; running out of fuel in 2004. Well, this was the day for 2005.

From the log: Headed ashore to wash up then back to the boat to depart. Planned to go south to Frenchboro Long Island. Hoisted main and headed out on a NW breeze. Wind was dying so we powered out Western Way. About halfway out I glanced down into the cabin to see WATER on the cabin sole! Quick check showed the bilge was FULL! Flipped on bilge pump which quickly lowered water level. H truned boat around while I checked everything„head, insturments, stuffing box, seacocks, engine raw water system, potable water tanks. No signs of water anywhere. After much deliberation decided it must have been siphoning in through bilge pump outlet, though that seemed strange w/3 outlet hoses attached to one through hull. Seems that that would act as a siphon break. Returned to NE and cleaned up bilge and cabin sole; slightly greasy from oil or diesel that must have been in the bilge. Yuch. H took G ashore and to the beach. I cleaned, looked things over again and finally relaxed.
