Distance Travelled: 18.8 nm | Brooklin/Wooden Boat School to Northeast Harbor, Mount Desert Island
We were anxious to move on further east and were dismayed to find thick fog when we woke. Fortunately it lifted by late morning and we were
able to head out.
From the log: Woke to FOG!! Gavin slept in„0645! Heather up, I "slept" for another hour. H took G ashore while I cleaned up the boat and did some route planning while we watied for the fog to lift. H and G back at about 1030 when the fog lifted at least out to the reach. We tossed around a few ideas about where to go„NE Harbor? Blue Hill? ¶ About 1115 fog scaled back even more and we got ready to go.Dropped the mooring @ 1130 while H got G some lunch. Said farewell to Tim and Heidi [who were bound for other locales; Britton, too, was heading off on his own, but he was ashore when we left] and headed out. Fair current and some extra push from a light SW breeze. Making 6+ knots! Motored across Jericho Bay w/ H at helm and on through Casco Passage where some last fog lingered. Headed across Blue Hill Bay towards Bass Harbor. Tried to sail briefly, but wind died down again. At Bass Harbor Bar the wind seemed to be picking up and we reached through the shallows and chop of wind agains current at 7+ knots! Motored through brief wind hole then sailed the rest of the way to Western Way, reaching through a moderate swell. Ran all the way into NE Hbr at 5+ knots. ¶ No moorings available, so we had to get a floating dock. Puke. Went in to Bar Harbor so that Gavin could ride the bus [his favorite thing to do during the cruise!]. Had pizza for dinner. Back aboard by 1915. Rowdy party nearby but broke up by 2000. ¶ Relaxed. Had rain lightning accompanied by strongish gusts which came dead astern due to being on the dock, driving the rain in through the companionway.
Harbor Notes: Decent spot for access to MDI/Acadia. 200 series moorings $20/night. Great protection. Prefer Somesville, but with a small child, shore and bus access is much easier in Northeast. Crowded, but much friendlier than Southwest Harbor/Manset.
