Lovely Early Season Sailing

May 21 | 6.0 Nautical Miles

Arrived at the boat at 1300. Seemed to be no wind, but a beautiful partly sunny day, so I puttered about the boat doing minor projects. It looked like there might be wind further outside the anchorage so at 1400 or so I dropped the mooring even though there was but a breath of air. Ghosted out of the anchorage at less than one knot. As I reached the edge of the mooring field the wind started filling in at approx. 8 knots or so. Sailed out of the anchorage then reached toward upper Basket Ledge in strengthening breeze at about 5.5 knots. Nice! Approaching the ledge the wind clocked ahead. Beat up in close to Chebeague then tacked. Thought I could just lay Lower Basket ledge on one tack. Wind was fresh at 12-15 knots so I pinched just a bit till I was clear of the ledge then cracked off for Falmouth. Nice screaming reach at 6.2 knots steady. Rolled jib and prepared to sail back to the mooring. At the edge of the mooring field the wind disappeared again. Ghosted in for a while. Eventually I was becalmed so I motored the last 1/4 mile or so to the mooring. Short sail, but sweet sweet sweet!
