Close-Hauled. Both Ways.

June 23 | 9.2 Nautical Miles

More westerlies. Headed to the boat around 0900. Had a nice sail in a comfortable 12-15 knots up toward Portland on a beam to close reach. As I got near Fish Point, the wind lightened some and I gybed around to head back toward Falmouth. Somehow I was on a cloes-hauled course. Huh? 180 degrees from a beam-close reach should be a beam to broad reach, right?

Anyway, I saw Glissando approaching from Falmouth so I tacked up closer to shore to pass close by. We exchanged a wave and Tim gybed around behind me. I stalled the boat for a moment to allow him to get some way on, and we had a nice side-by-each sail for a few minutes before he reached off outside Clapboard. I continued on toward Falmouth and had to take one extra tack to lay in to the anchorage. Click here for a picture, courtesy Tim Lackey.
